October is Here!
We have had a great first month of school, and are looking forward to all this month has to offer. Fox Hill kicked off the Boosterthon fundraising campaign today. Please check backpacks for the Funrun information!
This week we are wrapping up our Science unit on matter. Students have been exploring matter and its phases, and are creating models in a digital notebook. Ask your fifth grader what the particles in your glass of water, and ice cubes are doing!
We finished the first topic in math, place value, and are on to adding and subtracting decimals next. We will also explore properties of addition- associative and commutative, as well as using compatible numbers and compensation to add and subtract numbers mentally.
In my ELA class we are finishing up writing poems "from the heart." Watch for some of these on Seesaw! Students are enjoying my read aloud, Seedfolks, and will be writing their own book recommendations this week after I model one for them. I am hoping to create a file of these recommendations for students to use to help them select great books. We are also practicing grammar skills this week, taking a look at subjects and predicates. Also beginning this week- a daily practice of writing a Greek or Latin root word and their derivatives. Students will study these, and each week we will have an auction, where they can bid on the number of words they know. I will post Root Word Champions on this blog!
Of course the biggest news is the addition of our class pets: gerbils named Snickers, Dawn and Doge! I am sure some students will be asking for permission to take them home over school vacations. Feel free to contact me for information about this.
Finally, thank you so much to all of you for coming to conferences, and to Back to School Night. Your support is an invaluable asset to your your child's education!
